Hey guys,

I'm considering my options for moving back to Ontario from Calgary. I already know Toronto's Magic scene from living there for many years. My two other options are Kingston and Ottawa.

If someone could provide some candid thoughts on the ability to play Magic in Kingston or Ottawa, it would be appreciated. My favorite formats are Legacy and Draft.

Thanks!

Miles

Hey Miles,

Kingston has a pretty decent limited community (two drafts a week, usually a couple of pre-releases for new sets), with anywhere from 8-16 people showing up. I wouldn't say it's a particularly competitive group of people, which only a few people going to PTQs regularly.

Maybe half a dozen people play legacy in town, but there is nothing sanctioned. EDH is pretty popular too.

Both have pretty good magic scenes. I lived in both Kingston and Ottawa in the last two years, and wasn't dissapointed with either city. I was able to play a lot of limited in both, but I think legacy is definitely bigger in Ottawa. Of course, if you want to play in Ottawa, the stores that offer the most events are quite far from downtown and a pain to get to. In Kingston the stores are both downtown and easy to get to.

Unless you're a student or you're married, don't move to Kingston.

Yeah I more or less agree with this haha... I'm a student, and I don't even like it anymore.

Thank you for the candid thoughts! I'll see what impression Kingston gives me when I visit in a couple of weeks to scout it out.

Do you know the good stores' names in Kingston and Ottawa so that I can Google maps them?

Check out Spin Desserts while you're in Kingston too, not far from 4 Colour (on Princess St.). Not great for magic, but the food is amazing.

Bumping this thread because I'm probably moving to Kingston for the next 6 months.

I'm working on Queens University campus. In addition to the two stores mentioned above, is there any other Magic scene or will I have to learn Magic Online?

I primarily play Draft but could probably play *shudder* Standard.

Just the two stores. Some of us play MODO too, but you can get your draft fix at the two stores just fine.

Hey Andrew,

When I was in Kingston for interviews, I swung by 4 Colour 8 Bit in the afternoon.

It seemed like a really friendly and clean store. It wasn't a designated Games Night, but there were still people playing cards and a board game.

A good first impression!

FWIW, 4 colour is probably the cleanest store I've ever played magic at :p
